Liverpool’s owners are beginning to flex their financial muscle in the transfer market with the £13m and David Ngog paid to Sunderland for Jordan Henderson looking like the start of a busy summer’s shopping at Anfield.  Blackpool’s Charlie Adam, Stewart Downing from Aston Villa, Blackburn's Phil Jones – the possibilities are endless, though mostly young and British. A fresh start for Liverpool after a couple of seasons in the doldrums? A team being assembled that can challenge for the title? Or just sensible building for a long term future? Discuss these questions and anything else that you would like with Rory Smith. He’ll be here from 1pm but you can get your questions in now. 11:03

Nick Pearce:  Right everyone, Rory is online and ready to answer your questions... 1:00

Rory Smith:  Hi everyone. I've just been looking at Everton's pre-season fixtures. That game with Bury looks tasty. That's probably what most of you want to talk about, isn't it? 1:01

Comment From Gareth   There have been conflicting reports, some suggesting that Ngog was part of the deal for Henderson, while more recent reports suggesting the Henderson deal was a cash deal, and the Ngog deal is totally seperate. Can you confirm what exactly the situation is? 1:01

Rory Smith:  At this stage, as far as I'm aware the two deals are linked, but to be honest the intricacies of these things are such that they may not be. I think the Henderson fee is about £16m including Ngog, but how the clubs play that - as one deal or two - is up to them and not, to be honest, particularly relevant. It mirrors the Torres/Luis Garcia move a couple of years ago, or Owen and Nunez: separate if it suits someone. 1:04

Comment From Steve   Why would Liverpool go for JH when they are stacked in the middle of the field with Gerrard, Mereiles, Lucas, Spearing, and Poulsen? I thought they needed wingers to feed Carroll. 1:04

Rory Smith:  That's a very good question, Steve, and one I suspect I'll spend most of my afternoon writing about. The Henderson - and Adam - deals suggest Dalglish is looking at going 4-3-3, with Downing wide left and, presumably, Suarez playing off Carroll. Whether that provides enough width and balance, though, is another issue entirely. 1:06

Comment From Sunny   Hi Rory. Do you think Liverpools targetting of mainly British players demonstrates a new strategy for LFC or it's a merely a result of the international window not being open yet ? 1:07

Rory Smith:  No, I think this is a deliberate policy. Most of the targets fit the profile FSG have always said they want: young, native, on relatively low wages and with high resale value. Comolli's time at Spurs showed he was keen on young British talent, too - Bale and, if memory serves, Huddlestone - and Dalglish is definitely keen to give Liverpool a more native look. All three levels of the club have the same philosophy on that. 1:08

Comment From Journey   Do you have any info on what was happening with Phil Jones today, he's apparently signing for Manchester now? 1:09

Rory Smith:  The Jones situation, Journey, has all the symptoms of a saga. He has, I think, a £16m release clause in his contract. By all accounts, Liverpool will trigger that with an offer and, if they do, so will United. Who the player will then choose depends on who you speak to. He's not having a medical with Liverpool today, and I don't think he's having a medical at United today. My guess would be United are more likely than Liverpool, but I don't think anything will happen today. 1:11

Comment From Yas   Do you think Henderson is good value for money, given that wide players are probably more of a priority? Juan Mata would seem an obvious choice over Henderson? 1:12

Rory Smith:  That's two questions, really. In all honesty, for £16m (including Ngog), Henderson's overpriced, but that could be put down to the English tax that all clubs put on domestic players (and which is, by the by, restrictive to the development of young talent). I would have said Liverpool didn't need a central midfielder but do abundantly need a wide player or two, but evidently Dalglish and Comolli didn't agree. As for Mata, he will leave Valencia this summer, but I suspect it will only be for Liverpool if Villa don't let Downing leave. 1:14

Comment From Barney   Do you think there is still any chance of Ashley Young signing for Liverpool, or is he already on his way to Manchester United? 1:15

Rory Smith:  Before I went on holiday two weeks ago, Liverpool were reasonably confident of seeing off United for Young. That situation, it seems, has now reversed, and it's fair to say he looks Old Trafford-bound. That, in my humble opinion, may be a bullet dodged for Liverpool. Ashley Young is, if you ask me, a one-trick pony. He cuts inside and shoots. That's basically it. 1:17

Comment From Nick   Could the signing of Henderson pave the way for Kenny to make the audacious decision to sell Stevie G to Real? He's not performed for a while now and if LFC want to cash in, time is fast running out. 1:17

Rory Smith:  Wow. That's a bit out of left-field. No, I don't think Dalglish will sell Gerrard, and no, I don't think Real are interested in him. He has under-performed for about 18 months, though, and Henderson definitely looks like a long-term replacement and a short-term runner. Gerrard looks like he's at that stage where he has to reinvent himself a little bit, and having Henderson's energy around him should help that process. 1:19

Comment From Ade   I'm not sure why there is such hype around Charlie Adam. Yes, he shone in a (relegated) Blackpool team. But I think he's too slow and inconsistent. And he doesn't fit the FSG profile. Is he Liverpool quality? 1:19

Rory Smith:  I saw Adam probably 10 times in the flesh last season and he did shine - genuinely shine - in that side. But it was a team that was built to his strengths in a way that Liverpool won't be. He doesn't quite fit the profile but he is still relatively young and there are few players who are quite so statistically impressive. If Adam was allowed on just to take the set-pieces, then I'd sign him. Since he's not, personally he's not for me, but my opinion is - at best - third in line to Dalglish and Comolli. 1:21

Comment From Nadim   What are LFC's alternatives if Jones goes to United? Is Scott Dann as good as it gets? Why are we refusing to buy from abroad? 1:23

Rory Smith:  Hi Nadim. I don't think there's a refusal to buy from abroad, but young and English is definitely preferred. If Jones ends up at Old Trafford, I'd say Mamadou Sakho (price depending) could be targeted. They have watched Scott Dann, but how high up the list of priorities he is, I'm not sure. 1:24

Comment From Ray   It seems Conor Wickham is our main target as a striker, but if that move fails who else could you see being our targets? 1:25

Rory Smith:  Wickham is the prime target for the third striker role, and with Ngog being allowed to leave, it would seem Dalglish and Comolli are fairly confident of landing him. It would make sense to me to go for an experienced back-up if he does not arrive - a modern day Karlheinz Riedle, for example - but who that is, I can't say. 1:27

Comment From Mahathir   How far along are we in our pursuit of a solid left back. It was obviously the most problematic position last season with Konchesky, Aurelio, Kelly, Flanagan, Johnson and Robinson all having a shot at the position. It was kind of surprising to see Kenny's first signing to be a midfielder instead of a left back. Will Enrique be the solution? 1:28

Rory Smith:  Enrique is the first choice left-back and, with that, Liverpool's full back positions will be pretty well stocked. I'd expect him to sign for around £9 million sooner rather than later. The scout reports the club got back suggested they weren't overly impressed with his defensive positioning, but Steve Clarke will be confident he can coach that out of him. Konchesky will be sold, and I suspect Fabio will be too. Shame, that, because he's a lovely man. He's just made of glass. 1:29

Comment From Kate   Who has the bigger say over signings, Dalglish or Commoli? 1:30

Rory Smith:  Officially, it's a collaborative effort with Comolli making recommendations and Dalglish having the final say, but from the look of the players being targeted, it's Dalglish. Comolli's influence may be seen later in the window, when alternatives have to be found and bargains sought. That said, as I said before, he does have previous for recruiting young and English. 1:32

Rory Smith:  Oh, and just to correct what I said earlier, Phil Jones is currently having a medical. 1:32

Rory Smith:  At Manchester United. 1:32

Comment From David   Do you think that Alberto Aqualani may still have a future at Liverpool? I can't understand why he is been overlooked. He is in a different class to any of our current or potential midfielders including Henderson and Charlie Adams. He has had a good season at Juventus and was Impressive for Italy in their recent win over Estonia. 1:32

Rory Smith:  My Auntie Maureen had one cap for Italy, running the midfield alongside Dino Baggio in a straightforward victory over a Baltic state, and to be fair she wasn't good enough to play in the Premier League either. I agree with you on Aquilani - he's a classy player who deserved more of a chance - but we're in the minority. 1:34

Comment From Clartboy   Do we really need to splash more millions on Connor Wickham as a 'third' striker when we've got young strikers and potential superstars such as Raheem Stirling coming through and enough untility players such as Stevie and Dirk to play up front if needed? 1:35

Rory Smith:  I take your point, but Sterling's a winger and it's a dangerous game to rely on the likes of Adam Morgan coming through to fill first-team slots. Kuyt is a good shout, though: he would fit the bill as a third-choice striker, but his form at the tail end of last season was so good that I'd guess he'll have a more important role to play. 1:37

Comment From Rory   Why are we chasing a central defender when we have Martin Kelly? He played there for the youth team/reserves and i feel he is Liverpools natural replacement for Carragher! 1:37

Rory Smith:  Possibly, but there is a school of thought that Kelly doesn't read the game well enough to play centrally. His athleticism may make up for that, but for the time being, he'll be vying with Flanagan to be back-up to Johnson at right-back. A central defender - if not two - should be a priority. Sadly, that will mean the end for Kyrgiakos, the natural replacement for Poseidon, Lord of the Sea. 1:38

Comment From TomD   I think we have a pre-occupation with width. The great team of 87/88 only had Barnes in the traditional winger role but he was everywhere and did most damage through the middle. Isnt Kenny's philosophy more about fluidity, movement and pace? You'll then get to the by-line despite not having real 'wingers' on the pitch? 1:39

Rory Smith:  That's a very sensible assessment, TomD. One of my best mates is called Tom D, and that's far too sensible a comment for you to be him. Kenny playing Meireles wide left suggests that may be his take on it, too, but the problem he has now that he didn't in 88 is that Carroll needs service from the wings to make the most of his talent. They need one winger, at least, and that seems to be Downing. 1:41

Comment From Civic   None of the players discussed so far could be classed as a marquee signing. Do you think Dalglish/Comolli will be aiming for one? Llorente surely too expensive but his stock can only rise and would fit the FSG model 1:42

Rory Smith:  I'm torn on that, to be honest. Everything I've heard suggests the seven or eight who come in will all fit the same mould - Henderson, Wickham, Adam, Enrique, Doni, Marveaux etc - of youth, resale value etc. But there is a part of me that wonders whether FSG need one marquee name to restate their intention. The problem with that, of course, is that marquee names don't go to clubs who aren't in Europe. 1:43

Comment From Grundy   What's the latest news on Agger? IMO i think he's worth keeping around as he not only adds to the defence but is also our best ball playing CB 1:45

Rory Smith:  I agree wholeheartedly, and the last I heard the club are of the same view. When fit and on form, he's one of the best in the country, and Dalglish, Comolli and Clarke are minded to give him chance to show that. 1:46

Comment From andym   what about cole, stay or go? Worth 100K a week, surely FSG will want to cash in on him? 1:47

Rory Smith:  For £100,000 a week, I'd say so. It depends if there's any takers, though: Spurs (I think) ruled themselves out while I was on holiday (it was lovely, thanks for asking), which means Liverpool are reliant on QPR - to use the vernacular - ponying up a bit of dough. 1:48

Comment From Mark F   How many of the current Liverpool youth team do you think will get a chance in the first 11 next year. It was great to see Flanagan, Robinson and Kelly get a chance. Do you think it is too early for the likes of Cody, Sterling etc? 1:49

Rory Smith:  It's too early for them to be regulars, yep, but I think both Coady and Sterling will make their senior debuts next season, and will spend most of the campaign around the first team squad. Same goes for Robinson and Flanagan, and I'd like to see Andre Wisdom given a chance, too. Morgan seems to score goals, which is a vital quality, but he's maybe a step further back. 1:51

Comment From Paul   With LFC spending wat could be £60m plus in this window on new players does this mean the staduim development or stanley park project is no longer priority. ITS gone very quiet on that front 1:51

Rory Smith:  The decision-making process on that continues, but FSG are far too canny to spend money on transfers without making sure the funding is in place to secure the club's future. I've no idea when a final call will be made, but I suspect they're edging closer to redevelopment than relocation. 1:52

Comment From Rakesh   Do you think it's time to give the captains armband on to a younger player. Gerrard appears too injury prone now 1:53

Rory Smith:  His injuries are worrying, but he's the natural and spiritual leader of the club, so it would be counter-productive to strip him of the captaincy. If and when he does retire or leave - and should Jamie Carragher have left too - Reina would be an outstanding candidate to replace him. 1:54

Comment From Robbo   Has Pacheco's chance come and gone? Three successive managers don't appear to have rated him too highly. If he was going to make it; would he have done so by now...? 1:55

Rory Smith:  Dani's a great lad and a talented player, but he's perhaps not talented enough to play in the position he wants. If he was a winger, he would have had a chance by now; as he wants to play in the hole, a position that requires a team being structured around its occupant, it may never happen. I'd send him on loan for another year and see how he develops. 1:57

Comment From Paul   I've heard no mention of Gary Cahill in a while. Is he considered over the hill at 25? 1:59

Rory Smith:  Ha. No, far from it. Liverpool watched him a lot this season but appear to be of the view that his heart belongs to another. They're a bit blue over it, but probably won't moon for long. If you see what I mean. 2:00

Rory Smith:  Oh, that one. No, I wouldn't expect Malouda to sign. Too old, too expensive. And yes, a boy will one day be born who can swim faster than a shark. And TOWIE is better than Made in Chelsea, but both are the high point of 21st century British culture. 2:04
